Hubbard Rhino Barn

The Hubbard Rhino Barn is a highlight of most visits to the park. Here our researchers and student interns carefully excavate the fossils preserved in the ash of this ancient watering hole. The fossils are left in-situ (in place) for viewing. Staff are happy to visit with guests as they work in the bone bed to answer questions about fossils already excavated, as well as explaining the work currently ongoing.

Illustrations of the creatures discovered at Ashfall Fossil Beds line one wall of the barn, and provide a glimpse for visitors of what life may have looked like on the plains 12 million years ago.

A paved walkway and boardwalk allow for easy access to and through the barn.
